Mothers for Natural Law Companies and Brand Names for non-GE Items Search the GreenPeople.org directory for 1000s of organic & eco-friendly products and services Contents Natural Products Companies and Associations Supplements The research team at M4NL spent three years working with the food industry to find out what the industry knows and feels about genetic engineering. In response to our initial inquiries it became clear that the natural products industry was eager for more information, and that the mainstream industry was comfortable with the FDA position on the issue. One of the biggest challenges natural products manufacturers face is how to keep their products non-GE. To solve this problem, M4NL hired two staff members to search the globe for non-GE ingredients. A database of non-GE suppliers for manufacturers is now available free of charge on this site. Creating a list of non-GE brands and products for consumers is an ongoing and labor-intensive task. The list on this page is not complete. It is intended as a starting place for shoppers just learning about GE. If you don’t see some of your favorite products on this list, please contact the manufacturers and ask them to call us if they’d like to be added to this list. We will check into their non-GE status and add them to the list as appropriate. The list of What to Eat and How to Shop gives an outline of the basics. Here are some specific brands and products that, to the best of our knowledge, do not contain genetically engineered components. However, we cannot guarantee that this information is 100% accurate. In some cases, items have been included on this list based on written confirmation from the companies involved. We are not in a position to verify such statements and have simply assumed that they are true.

Natural Products Dairy Products: The following dairies state that all of their products are made with 100% organic ingredients. Their animals are not treated with rBGH or other hormones and are only fed organically grown feed. There are no bioengineered dairy cultures or enzymes in their products. If, however, a product lists “natural flavors” on the label, that product might contain a genetically engineered ingredient. Companies and Associations Friends of the Earth surveyed companies in Europe and reported their responses in an email on 7 March 2000. AMERICAN GROWERS FOODS offers certified chemical-free, non-GMO Corn Flakes, Hearty Wheat Flakes, 5-Grain Harvest Blend, Shredded Wheat Nuggets, Toasted Oat Rings, Rolled Oats (Oatmeal), Quick-Cooking Rolled Oats, Wholesome Hot Wheat Cereal, Yellow and White Corn Tortilla Chips, Corn Meal, Corn Muffin Mix, Hot Corn Cereal and Corn Flour. These items can be purchased through the Company's website. Corn Refiners Association: This organization supports the regulatory policies and procedures of the FDA, USDA and EPA. They believe such procedures are sufficient to insure the proper and safe use of biotehcnology. Dean Foods Vegetable Company: According to a letter from the Company, “At this time we do not have genetically engineered food on our BirdsEye and FRESHLIKE labels, however, some of our private label products are genetically engineered.” Frito-Lay: Frito-Lay Consumer Affairs writes, "Frito-Lay contracts its corn and potato growers. At the end of 1999, Frito-Lay told its growers that it would not allow genetically modified corn. Our potatoes have never been an issue because the varieties that we use are not genetically modified. So, we do not use genetically modified corn or potatoes." Note that this statement does not cover all ingredients of Frito-Lay products. For details, call Pam Hammons at 1-800-352-4477. GeniSoy Products Company: Based in Fairfield, California, the Company makes healthy and tasty soy-based products, including protein-based bars, powders, and roasted “Soynuts.” GeniSoy uses only water-processed isolated soy protein that retains the naturally occurring levels of isoflavones (a phytonutrient) and all the protein comes from certified non-GMO soybeans. They have brought out a “Pure Food” symbol which signifies that a product contains no genetically engineered organisms. Bearitos® Tortilla Chips is the first Hain product packaged with this label. Well done, Hain! Infant Formula Council (IFC): The Council supports the FDA's position that Monsanto's genetically engineered Roundup Ready soybeans are safe. Most of the major formula companies belong to this council. Mothers for Natural Law urges you to write to the IFC and tell them you feel it is unconscionable to use innocent newborns as guinea pigs for untested, experimental foods. Kellogg's: state that their products may contain genetically engineered ingredients, and that they believe these pose no safety hazrd to consumers. Red Star Yeast: They do not currently use any genetically engineered organisms (GEOs) in the manufacturing of their yeast.

Supplements Many of our members have called us with concerns about the vitamins and food supplements they take every day. NOW Foods, one of the supplement manufacturers M4NL works closely with, offered to explain the impact GE is having on their industry. NOW Foods is a family-owned manufacturer and distributor of dietary supplements and natural foods. For nearly four years, despite the enormous challenges the company faces because of this technology, NOW has offered its whole-hearted support to our organization, distributing our materials to tens of thousands of customers around the country and providing us with substantive guidance, feedback and practical advice. Mothers for Natural Law spoke with James Roza, Director of Quality Assurance of Now Natural Foods, and 20-year veteran of the Natural Products Industry. James is on the board of Natural Nutritional Foods Association's Compliance Committee, and the Quality Control Committee of the American Herbal Products Association. He is currently chairing a committee to establish standards for Grape Seed Extract Products and as a member of the GMO Task Force (with Mothers for Natural Law), working towards the preservation of Identity Preserved Foods and Ingredients. Jim, can you tell our readers how vitamins are made? “There are many different ways vitamins can be produced. Some of the more common ways would include: hydrolyzation (breaking things into smaller components), enzymatic conversation (using enzymes to convert substances), and purification of food commodities such as corn syrup or soy oil, bio-fermentation, and chemical synthesis. For example, Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) is produced from the glucose extracted from corn syrup by using some of the aforementioned procedures.” So, GE ingredients have found their way even into supplements? “Unfortunately, yes. Because the starter material used to produce some of our most commonly used vitamins are food commodities such as soy and corn, the use of genetically modified foods reaches the consumer even at the supplement level. The proteins or fragments of the soy or corn remain intact through the various permutations the foods must undergo before they reach their finished forms as vitamins. This also applies to the excipients (fillers, lubricants, processing agents, etc.) that are also used in vitamin production.” What is NOW doing about these GE ingredients? “NOW Foods is pro-actively working with suppliers to make them aware of the potential problems inherent in GE foods. It is our expressed desire to lobby for the preservation of non-GE foods so that they can be labeled as such and give the consumer the right to make an educated decision of their own. We hope to create a situation whereby manufacturers have easy access to vitamins and food ingredients produced from non-GE foods. At this point it is a grass roots effort, but all great causes have their start there. Given the potential hazards posed by these genetically modified foods, it is the only ethical thing to do.” What are your feelings about the GE components in the supplements industry? “I believe there will be a divergence of supplement products offered to the consumer. Some companies will take the high road and use non-GE food components in their products and others will not, seeing it as a frivolous concession to "radical activist groups." Whichever the case, I believe, based on the groundswell of support this is receiving from the public, that it will be incumbent upon manufacturers to label their products accordingly. The challenge will be to move this issue forward expeditiously. I believe we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg in regards to an issue that will continue to grow as new transgenic and genetically modified material are produced.” How is NOW addressing consumer concerns about GE foods? What is your position on labeling? “By being part of an industry task force to champion the cause of GE-free foods, working with Mothers for Natural Law, and making our suppliers aware of its potential down sides. We are also embarking upon a continual program in all our divisions to do everything possible to eliminate genetic engineering from our products. We will start with letters to our suppliers to solicit information about the possible use of GE components in their products, and set standards for what is and is not acceptable. In terms of labeling, we will work towards finding a position that is meaningful and workable for all concerned. This will require input from all parties and be in accordance with labeling requirements that we would all adhere to.”
